Sphygmomanometers & Aneroids

Sphygmomanometers & Aneroids

Sphygmomanometers and Aneroids are devices used to measure blood pressure. A Sphygmomanometer is a manual device that typically consists of an inflatable cuff, a pump, and a gauge. The cuff is placed around the upper arm and inflated to occlude the blood flow in the brachial artery. The gauge is then used to measure the pressure at which blood flow resumes, which is known as the systolic blood pressure. The pressure is then gradually released and the gauge is used again to measure the pressure at which blood flow resumes, which is known as the diastolic blood pressure.

Aneroid Sphygmomanometers, on the other hand, are manual devices that use a gauge with a pointer and a spring mechanism to measure blood pressure. An aneroid sphygmomanometer does not contain mercury, which makes them more lightweight and portable than mercury sphygmomanometers.

Both types of devices are commonly used in medical settings, such as doctor's offices and hospitals, to measure blood pressure in patients. They can also be used at home with proper training.
