Description
The Medtronic Situate detection system X kit is available from MedicalEx in the configurations listed below. The kits combine the Console X with body and room scanners that find RF-tagged sponges in vivo and in the room, as an adjunct to manual counting that reconciles counts before the case closes.

Main Description
The Situate detection system is an adjunct technology to manual sponge counting that uses radiofrequency-tagged sponges and scanners to locate missing items. Two kits are listed: one with the Console X, body scanner and room scanner, and a fuller kit that adds the extremity scanner and the ARQ SPH configuration. The body scanner performs in-vivo detection through tissue, blood and bone and near metal, at distances up to about 16 inches. The room scanner locates tagged sponges discarded into linen or trash around the field, the other common place counts go wrong. The console guides the workflow with on-screen prompts and generates unique confirmation codes for each scan that can be entered into the medical record during the procedure.
Features and Benefits
- In-vivo detection – Finding a sponge before closure, without reopening or x-ray, is the system's reason to exist.
- Room wide search – The room scanner covers the non-patient half of missing sponge events.
- Guided workflow – Console prompts standardize the scan protocol across staff and shifts.
- Documented scans – Confirmation codes create a record for the chart at the time of the scan.

Why Choose This Product
Retained surgical sponges are a never event with severe consequences. A detection adjunct is the technological layer beyond counting alone. The two kit levels let facilities equip main ORs or extend coverage without re-specifying the system.
- Adjunct, not hope – Objective detection on top of counts is the differentiator over counting-only protocols.
- Before closure – Detection happens while correction is still cheap and safe: during the case.
- Audit trail – Scan confirmation codes document diligence in the record.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the system replace sponge counts?
No. It is an adjunct to manual counting, not a replacement. Counts remain the primary process. The system adds a detection sweep that can find a tagged sponge the count missed, in the patient or in the room.
Do regular sponges work with it?
No. The system detects sponges fitted with its RF tags, so facilities stock the tagged sponge line alongside the scanners. Standard untagged sponges are invisible to it.
Is this device sterile and single use?
Yes. It is supplied sterile for single use unless its label states otherwise, and it must not be reprocessed or reused. Check the package integrity and expiry before every case.
How should this device be stored?
Store it in its original packaging under normal room conditions away from heat sources and moisture. Rotate stock by expiry date and quarantine any unit with damaged packaging.
What if a configuration I need is not listed?
The configurations shown are the ones carried in this catalog for this product line. If a case needs a different size or load, contact us before ordering so the right configuration can be confirmed rather than substituted at the table.
